The Puffy Monarch is Puffy's top-of-the-line ultra-luxury hybrid, and the plushest, most heavily layered mattress in their lineup. Like the Royal, it's built as a “2-in-1” mattress - a deep, contouring comfort system on top over a firmer, more structured base - but the Monarch goes further with 12 layers, a 16" profile, alpaca wool filling, and a dedicated latex response layer for added bounce-back under the plush top. It sits in the medium-soft range, generally cited around 4 to 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is Puffy's flagship model: the one built for sleepers who want the deepest, most cushioned feel on the floor without sacrificing structure, cooling, or edge support. Note that the Monarch isn't offered in Twin or Full sizes.

MEET THE PUFFY MONARCH MATTRESS

Firmness, Construction, and Performance

At The Drift, we take mattresses (and your sleep) seriously. That starts with what your bed is made of and how that translates to its feel and durability. Let's dive in.

Feel & Firmness

  • Firmness Level: The Puffy Monarch sits in the medium-soft range, generally around 4 to 5 out of 10. As with the Royal, Puffy doesn't publish a single official number, and outside testers land in a fairly wide band, so treat this as an approximate range. It's the plushest mattress we carry - softer than the Royal and noticeably softer than any of the Helix models.
  • Feel Description: The comfort system is deep and slow to compress - alpaca wool, a fiber quilt, and multiple foam layers create a full-body sink that most closely resembles a high-end memory foam bed. The Monarch's added latex response layer sets it apart from the Royal here: latex compresses and recovers faster than foam, so even at this depth of sink the surface feels a bit more buoyant and less “stuck” than a pure memory-foam plush bed. The coil base underneath still provides real structure, so you settle into the plush layers rather than sinking through them.
  • Our Take: The Monarch is the most evenly rated mattress in our showroom, at 8.5 across every category we track. That consistency reflects its position as Puffy's flagship: premium materials at every layer, from the moisture-wicking TENCEL™ cover down to the firm core support foam. Support in particular stands out relative to the Royal - the added latex layer and thicker overall build mean the Monarch holds up better for heavier sleepers and doesn't trade support for plushness the way some deep-sink mattresses do.

Construction & Materials

Height: 16"

Design: Ultra-luxury 12-layer hybrid with alpaca wool, a latex response layer, and zoned support foam over pocketed coils. Cool TENCEL™ quilted cover standard. Lifetime Warranty. Assembled in the USA.

Layer Breakdown

  • Cool Quilted Cover with TENCEL™: A quilted cover built with TENCEL™ fibers, designed to absorb significantly more moisture than cotton and wick it away faster, keeping the surface dry and cool to the touch.
  • Alpaca Wool Filling: A natural wool fill layer that regulates temperature and wicks moisture, adding to the Monarch's cooler, drier sleep surface relative to an all-foam bed.
  • Comfort Quilt Fiber Layer: A soft fiber layer beneath the cover that adds initial cushioning and supports airflow near the surface.
  • Full-Body Pressure Relief Layer: A dedicated foam layer that spreads pressure relief evenly across the body, not just at the shoulders and hips.
  • Plush Contouring Layer: A contouring foam layer that begins the mattress's deep, body-hugging sink before the denser layers below.
  • Enhanced Support Layer: An added support foam layer, unique to the Monarch's build, that reinforces the transition between the plush comfort system and the responsive latex layer beneath it.
  • Monarch Latex Response Layer: A latex layer that compresses and recovers faster than foam, adding responsiveness and bounce-back that keeps the plush top from feeling flat or slow to move on.
  • Reflexive Memory Foam: A responsive memory foam layer that contours to pressure points while recovering more quickly than traditional slow-response memory foam.
  • Cloud Breeze™ Technology: A channeled, zoned foam layer that adds targeted support and airflow - firmer under the hips and lumbar, softer at the shoulders.
  • Contour-Adapt Coils: Zoned, individually pocketed coils that provide the mattress's core structural support and edge stability.
  • Firm Core Support Foam: A dense foundational foam layer beneath the coils that stabilizes the mattress and supports its long-term structure.
  • Grip Base Cover: A non-slip base layer that keeps the mattress in place on your foundation or frame.

Why It Matters: The Monarch's 12-layer build adds two things the Royal doesn't have: alpaca wool for natural temperature regulation, and a dedicated latex response layer for faster recovery under the plush top. Together they're why the Monarch rates a half-point higher than the Royal on support and durability without giving up any pressure relief - the latex layer in particular is what keeps a very deep-sink mattress from feeling unsupportive over time.

Our Ratings & Advice

We've tested over 1,000 mattresses in the last 10 years and helped serve better sleep to over 1 million shoppers. Our ratings are born out of lab-based testing and real world evaluations.

Performance Breakdown

CategoryOur RatingSummary
Pressure Relief8.5 / 10Outstanding. The full-body pressure relief layer, plush contouring layer, and alpaca wool combine for the deepest, most even pressure relief in the showroom, especially for side sleepers.
Cooling8.5 / 10Excellent. The TENCEL™ cover and alpaca wool actively pull moisture and heat away from the surface, and the Cloud Breeze™ layer adds airflow channels through the foam - a meaningful advantage on a bed this thick and deep-sinking.
Support8.0 / 10Excellent, and the Monarch's strongest differentiator from the Royal. The added latex response layer and enhanced support foam mean the mattress holds structure well even under significant sink, which is unusual for a mattress this plush.
Motion Isolation8.5 / 10Excellent. The thick, multi-layer foam and wool comfort system absorbs movement thoroughly before it reaches the coil layer - a strong pick for couples or light sleepers.
Edge Support8.5 / 10Excellent. The pocketed coil base and firm foam encasement hold the perimeter well despite the mattress's overall plushness, so the usable sleep surface extends close to the edge.
Ease of Movement8.5 / 10Very good, and better than most mattresses this plush thanks to the latex response layer's quicker recovery - though sleepers coming from a firm mattress will still notice more sink than they're used to.

Sleep Position Ratings

Excellent. This is the deepest pressure relief available on the floor, and the strongest recommendation for side sleepers who've found other plush mattresses either too soft or too hot.

Very good. The Enhanced Support layer and coil base provide real lumbar reinforcement even under a plush, deep-sink surface. Back sleepers who want structure without giving up comfort should test this against the Royal.

Not recommended. A deep-sink, medium-soft mattress like the Monarch tends to let the hips drop below the shoulders in this position. Stomach sleepers should test firmer options like the Helix Dawn instead.

Good, with the caveat that this is a slower, deeper-sink mattress than most. The latex layer helps repositioning feel less effortful than a pure memory-foam plush bed, but combination sleepers who spend real time on their stomach will feel the same trade-off stomach sleepers do.

Final Verdict

The Puffy Monarch is Puffy's flagship ultra-luxury hybrid - a 12-layer, 16" mattress built around alpaca wool, a dedicated latex response layer, and a deep, plush comfort system over a structured coil base. It's the most evenly rated mattress in our showroom, scoring 8.5 across every category, and it edges out the Royal on support and durability thanks to the added latex layer. For sleepers who want the deepest, most premium feel available and are willing to pay for it, the Monarch is the strongest recommendation on the floor.

Best For

  • Side sleepers who want the deepest, most even pressure relief in the showroom
  • Back sleepers who want a plush feel without giving up real lumbar support
  • Sleepers who want the most premium materials available - alpaca wool, TENCEL™, and latex
  • Anyone comparing the Royal and Monarch who wants more structure and bounce-back at the top of the price range

Not Ideal For

  • Stomach sleepers - the deep sink can let the hips drop below the shoulders
  • Sleepers who want a firm or minimal-sink surface
  • Shoppers who need a Twin or Full size - the Monarch isn't offered in those sizes
  • Budget-conscious shoppers - this is Puffy's most expensive model, and the Royal offers much of the same comfort profile for less
