The Drift Is The Only Store in Seattle to Try Bear Mattresses

The Bear Original is Bear Mattress's most accessible entry point, as a straightforward 10" all-foam mattress built around gel-infused memory foam, Bear's Celliant fiber recovery cover, and a high-density foam base. It's not trying to compete with coil-based hybrids on cooling or edge support, and it doesn't need to.

What it does well: motion isolation, gentle contouring pressure relief, and overnight muscle recovery at an approachable price. It's a strong fit for couples who are sensitive to partner movement, back sleepers who want a memory foam feel without the hybrid price tag, and budget-conscious shoppers who still want Bear's recovery technology in the cover.

MEET THE BEAR ORIGINAL MATTRESS

Firmness, Construction, and Performance

At The Drift, we take mattresses (and your sleep) seriously. That starts with what your bed is made of and how that translates to its feel and durability. Let's dive in.

Feel & Firmness

  • Firmness Level: The Bear Original comes in a single firmness — medium-firm, sitting around a 6.5–7/10. There are no soft or firm variants, making an in-store test especially important before committing.
  • Feel Description: The gel memory foam comfort layers give this mattress a slow, cradling quality. Your body sinks in gradually and pressure distributes across a wide surface area. Compared to a responsive hybrid, the Bear Original has a more traditional memory foam character: deliberate contouring, minimal bounce, and a "sleep inside the mattress" feel. The high-density base prevents you from sinking all the way through, keeping the overall feel structured despite the softness at the surface.
  • Our Take: The Bear Original's rating profile is an honest reflection of what all-foam construction does well and where it has limits. Motion isolation and pressure are the flagship qualities for all-foam, and the Bear Original is no exception. The cooling rating at 5.0/10 and edge support at 4.5/10 are the trade-offs, both of which are inherent to all-foam design rather than a flaw in the Bear Original specifically. For the right sleeper, particularly one who shares a bed and doesn't sleep hot, this mattress delivers real value at its price point.

Construction & Materials

Height: 10"

Design: Three-layer all-foam mattress with Celliant recovery cover. GREENGUARD Gold Certified and CertiPUR-US® certified. Made in the USA.

Layer Breakdown:

  1. Celliant Fiber Cover: Celliant fibers woven into the cover fabric convert body heat into infrared energy to support circulation and overnight muscle recovery. This same technology is found across Bear's entire mattress lineup regardless of price point.
  2. Gel-Infused Memory Foam (Comfort Layer): The primary comfort layer contours to the body and uses gel infusion to draw heat away from the surface, which is the main cooling mechanism in an otherwise foam-dominant construction.
  3. Pressure-Relief Memory Foam: A secondary foam layer that deepens the contouring effect and distributes body weight across a wider surface area, reducing pressure concentration at the shoulders and hips.
  4. High-Density Base Foam: The foundational support layer that prevents excessive sinkage, promotes spinal alignment, and gives the mattress its structural integrity over time.

Why It Matters: The Bear Original is a clean, no-frills design that prioritizes what matters most at an accessible price: a recovery-focused cover, gentle pressure relief, and a stable base. The absence of a coil system is the defining trade-off: it means less airflow, softer edges, and slower repositioning, but it also means better motion absorption and a quieter, more isolated sleep surface. GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US® certified throughout, with no fiberglass.

Our Ratings & Advice

We've tested over 1,000 mattresses in the last 10 years and helped serve better sleep to over 1 million shoppers. Our ratings are born out of lab-based testing and real world evaluations.

Sleep Position Ratings

Limited, especially for average to heavier body weights. The medium-firm feel doesn't offer enough surface give to fully cushion the shoulders and hips for most side sleepers. Lightweight side sleepers under 130 lbs may find this workable, but anyone else should compare it directly against a softer or more plush option in our showroom.

Good. The medium-firm surface and high-density foam base keep the lower back lifted and the spine reasonably aligned. This is the strongest sleep position for the Bear Original and the use case where it performs most consistently.

Fine for lighter body weights, but a poor option for anyone else. The medium-firm feel provides enough surface resistance to prevent excessive hip sink for stomach sleepers under 130 lbs. Heavier stomach sleepers will likely find the foam base insufficient for sustained spinal alignment. A firmer hybrid is a better fit.

Not recommended. The low ease-of-movement score reflects the real-world experience of shifting positions on a slow memory foam surface. If you move frequently throughout the night, the Bear Original Hybrid or another coil-based option will serve you significantly better.

Final Verdict

The Bear Original is Bear's most value-driven option. It’s a clean, honest all-foam mattress that delivers where it counts for its target customer. The motion isolation and pressure relief are the strongest elements of this bed. The Celliant recovery cover is the same technology you'll find on their most premium models. And the price makes both genuinely accessible. The trade-offs are real and worth understanding: cooling, edge support, and repositioning all take a back seat to the all-foam construction. For the right sleeper, none of that matters.

Best For

  • ✓ Couples and light sleepers who prioritize minimal motion transfer.
  • ✓ Back sleepers at average body weights who want a classic memory foam feel.
  • ✓ Budget-conscious shoppers who want Bear's recovery technology without a hybrid price.
  • ✓ Sleepers who prefer a "sleep inside the mattress" memory foam feel.

Not Ideal For

  • ✗ Hot sleepers. The all-foam construction limits airflow significantly.
  • ✗ Combination sleepers who move frequently throughout the night.
  • ✗ Sleepers who need strong edge support for full mattress utilization.
  • ✗ Side sleepers at average or heavier body weights who need deep pressure relief.
  • ✗ Heavier body weights across any sleep position: the hybrid lineup is a better structural fit.
