The foam vs. spring debate has been the organizing question of mattress content for over a decade. It's a reasonable starting point, but for most shoppers buying a mattress in 2026, it's also increasingly the wrong question.

Here's why: the traditional spring mattress, the bouncy, interconnected coil system most of us grew up on, represents a shrinking share of what the market actually sells at the $1,000+ tier. What's replaced it isn't foam winning outright. It's the hybrid: a mattress that combines foam comfort layers with a pocketed coil support system, capturing the pressure relief of foam and the airflow and responsiveness of coils in a single construction. Among premium DTC brands, hybrids are now the dominant format and the fastest-growing mattress category globally.

That matters for how you shop. The decision in front of most people isn't really foam vs. spring. It's all-foam vs. hybrid, and those two options have meaningful, specific differences worth understanding before you spend $1,500 on either.


What "Spring Mattress" Actually Means; And Why the Label Is Misleading

Not all spring mattresses are the same, and the differences are large enough to change every comparison you've read.

Traditional innerspring mattresses use interconnected coil systems, Bonnell coils, offset coils, or continuous wire coils, where the springs are linked together and respond as a unit. When one coil compresses, neighboring coils move with it. This creates the familiar "bouncy" feel, but it also means motion transfers easily across the mattress and the support is uniform rather than zoned. These are the mattresses most commonly found at budget price points and in hospitality settings.

Pocketed coil systems — used in hybrid mattresses — work entirely differently. Each coil is individually wrapped in its own fabric pocket, allowing it to compress independently from its neighbors. Pocket-sprung mattresses consist of individual coils wrapped in fabric pockets that move independently for better body contouring. The result is significantly better motion isolation, zoned support capability, and a more tailored response to the body than an interconnected system provides.

When you read "spring mattresses have poor motion isolation," that's describing a traditional innerspring, not a pocketed coil hybrid. The brands on our floor use pocketed coils. The comparison you've read online likely doesn't apply to the mattresses you're actually choosing between.


All-Foam vs. Hybrid: The Comparison That Actually Matters

With that distinction clear, here's how all-foam and hybrid constructions genuinely differ; based on what we carry and what we've observed on our floor.

Pressure relief: All-foam mattresses, particularly memory foam, excel here. Foam mattresses offer better weight distribution than spring mattresses, providing superior pressure relief for the heaviest parts of your body. The foam surrounds and conforms to the body, reducing point pressure at the hips, shoulders, and knees. For side sleepers with narrow frames or anyone with joint sensitivity, quality all-foam can be genuinely difficult to beat for comfort. Hybrids offer good pressure relief too, but the coil layer beneath limits how deeply the comfort foam can contour, which is a feature, not a bug, for back and stomach sleepers who need to stay lifted.

Cooling: This is where construction makes the clearest difference. Spring mattresses allow for increased airflow between the coils — however, in recent years, many memory foams also now include cooling gels and advanced open-cell structure to help regulate body temperature. That said, the coil layer in a hybrid creates continuous vertical airflow that foam technology supplements but can't fully replicate. 

Motion isolation: All-foam wins outright. Foam absorbs movement without transmitting it across the mattress surface, which is why it remains the preferred choice for couples where one partner moves frequently or keeps different hours. Hybrids with pocketed coils are meaningfully better on motion isolation than traditional innerspring, but foam still leads in this category. If motion isolation is your primary concern, it's worth testing both on a shared visit to feel the actual difference, not just read about it.

Responsiveness and ease of movement: Hybrids have the clear advantage. Coil systems push back against pressure and make repositioning easier, you move on a hybrid, not out of it. All-foam mattresses, especially memory foam, have a slow-response, contouring feel that some sleepers love and others find constraining. If you switch positions frequently through the night or tend to feel "stuck" in a foam mattress, a hybrid's responsiveness is a genuine quality-of-life improvement.

Durability: Not all mattress types hold up the same way over time. Coil-based support systems, found in hybrids and innerspring beds, are the more durable choice long term. Pocketed coils resist sagging and maintain their structure reliably for years. All-foam mattresses are more prone to breaking down over time, though quality foam densities (2.5 PCF and above in the comfort layer) can meaningfully slow that process. Even in hybrids, the foam comfort layer on top is subject to the same density-related wear as all-foam models, but the coil base underneath adds a layer of durability that all-foam mattresses simply don't have.

Both can work for back pain. The more important variable is firmness and how well the mattress maintains spinal alignment in your specific sleep position.
